Cities Series
Always anchored in her background growing up in rural Haiti and influenced by connections between spirituality and nature, between what she sees, but others barely perceive, Sergine André’s work has continually evolved to take in new experiences and contexts. The ‘Cities’ series began with an interpretation of what she could see from her window in Haiti, and the life she could see passing by. Initially these were flitting glimpses of an often chaotic environment with diffuse whispers of shapes and lights. As she moved, first to the metropol of Port-au-Prince and later to the denser and more multicultural urban environment of Europe, these interpretations have incorporated more organised forms with quasi-geometric blocks of colour and light more evident in the works, though always with some surprising elements, often astral or spectral in nature making their appearance.
This evolution has also been influenced by the change of latitude from the stronger rays of the tropics to the lighter shades and changing seasons of the northern hemisphere as well as more nighttime perspectives. For Djinn, through all this body of work, the key has been to capture and observe how people manage to live together jumbled up in these different environments and try to get on in their daily lives – universal challenges.
